World's Most Expensive Watermelon

You can expect to pay a hefty price when shopping for watermelons in the local grocery store at a time when the fruit is not in season. However, there’s an area of Japan that takes the meaning of pricey produce to a whole new level.

In Japan is the northern island of Hokkaido and it is here that one of the rarest types of watermelons in the world, the Densuke watermelon, is grown. These watermelons are thought to be far superior to the American watermelons because they are sweeter and firmer. The Japanese actually purchase these watermelons as gifts because they are so rare and sometimes produce only sixty fruit during a harvest. The largest watermelon of one such harvest weighed 24 pounds and was sold for $5,945. However, this was still not the most expensive. The most expensive watermelon was lighter at 17 pounds but was a much healthier and heartier fruit. This melon sold at auction for $6,100.
